Rockhampton Girls Grammar School
Asbestos Management Plan & ACM Registers

For Contractors

This page summarises the parts of the school’s Asbestos Management Plan and procedures that apply to tradespeople and service providers. It is a summary only — the full documents under Management Plan & Procedures always take precedence.

Before engaging you, the school’s Safety Officer will normally email you a contractor pack for the building or buildings you are working on. The same current information is always available on this site.

Before you start work

  1. Hold a work area access permit. Access to a work area is granted under the school’s asbestos management, asbestos incident management and work area access permit process. The permit is issued by the Officer in Charge (OIC), an OIC delegate, or the Safety Officer performing that role in a limited capacity — school staff cannot grant access without it. The OIC and delegates are named on the Asbestos Management Poster displayed on site.
  2. Check the register for your building. Go to Buildings, select the building you are working on, and read its asbestos register table and register document before starting. Buildings marked ACM present contain asbestos materials.
  3. Treat unlisted suspect materials as asbestos. If you identify material that may contain asbestos and is not recorded in the register, stop and report it to the OIC or delegate — it must be assessed before work continues.
  4. Standing prohibitions: no work (other than licensed asbestos removal) on low-density board; no enclosure, encapsulation or sealing of ACM other than approved make-safes; no sampling except by the relevant contractor arranged through the school; a demolition or refurbishment survey by a competent person is required before any refurbishment or demolition work.
  5. Plan around the school community. The work area must be cleared of students and staff; asbestos removal work is not conducted during school hours unless approved arrangements are in place; only the service providers involved may be present during removal works.

If you disturb or discover suspected asbestos

  1. Stop all work immediately.
  2. Do not touch or further disturb the scene, including any plant involved and any dust or debris suspected to contain asbestos.
  3. Restrict access — close and lock doors, barricade the area and put up warning signage.
  4. Report the incident immediately to a person identified on the Asbestos Management Poster, or to your supervisor as soon as possible.
  5. If clothing, head or face may be contaminated, dampen with water to limit dust and wait for instructions.
